Watch Glossary

Every hobby has its own vocabulary, and watch collecting has more than most. Some of it you meet on a spec sheet, some of it the first time a winder asks you to choose a number of turns per day and a direction you've never had to think about. This glossary covers the words that matter if you own — or are thinking about buying — an automatic watch and a watch winder: the settings, the parts of the movement those settings act on, and the care and hardware questions that come with keeping a collection running.

Each entry starts with a plain definition, then explains what the term means in practice. Where a term affects how you set or choose a winder, we say so directly. Winding & settings

Turns Per Day (TPD) — how many rotations a winder gives a watch in 24 hours, and the setting everything else depends on.
