Rotor
The rotor is the semicircular, freely swinging weight at the back of an automatic movement. As the wearer's wrist moves, gravity and momentum swing the rotor around its central bearing, and a train of gears converts that swing into winding energy for the mainspring. It is the part that makes an automatic watch "automatic" — and, through a display caseback, the part most owners actually watch working.
Weight, swing and harvest
A rotor is deliberately heavy — often made with dense metal at its outer rim — so that small movements of the wrist produce a decisive swing. It rotates a full 360 degrees, in both directions, all day. What the movement does with that motion varies: many modern calibres harvest from both directions of travel through reverser wheels (bidirectional winding), while others engage in one direction only and let the rotor free-spin on the return. Either way, a normal active day swings the rotor enough thousands of times to keep the spring at working tension.
Rotors are also the part of the self-winding story owners meet most directly: the faint whir of a free-spinning rotor in a unidirectional movement is a well-known characteristic, not a defect, and the gentle resistance of a rotor at work is part of what gives an automatic its living feel on the wrist.
One variation is worth knowing: the micro-rotor. Instead of sitting on top of the movement, a small, dense rotor is set into the movement's own level, letting the whole calibre be built thinner. It winds by the same principle — swing converted to spring tension — and from a winder's point of view behaves identically: it needs the same turns, in the same directions, as its full-size counterpart.
What it means for your winder
A watch winder works by moving the rotor without a wrist. The winder rotates the entire watch slowly, the rotor swings inside under gravity exactly as it does when worn, and the movement winds. This is why direction settings exist: your winder must offer the directions your rotor harvests from, and why the turns per day figure is really a rotor-work budget translated into winder rotations. If a watch stops on a correctly specified winder, check the direction setting before anything else — an unharvested direction produces an unwound watch inside a perfectly healthy machine. Lookups for both settings are in our TPD database.
Frequently asked questions
Can a rotor get damaged?
Rotors run on bearings that last for many years; heavy shocks can occasionally loosen a rotor or its bearing, which a watchmaker will hear immediately as an abnormal rattle and see to at service. Normal winder motion — slow, smooth, intermittent — is far gentler than wrist wear.
Why is my rotor noisy?
Some designs are audible by nature: unidirectional movements let the rotor spin freely and quickly in its non-winding direction, and certain calibres are famous for it. A change in noise — new grinding or knocking — is the thing worth a watchmaker's ear.
Does a winder spin the rotor the whole time?
No. Programmes alternate short rotations with long rests, so the rotor works in bursts across the day — the same pattern of effort and stillness it gets from a wrist.
