Choosing the right watch winder

Picking a winder is easier than it looks. You only need to decide three things: how many watches, what finish, and what settings.

How many watches?
Think about the watches you wear in rotation, not your whole collection. If you have one favourite, a single winder is all you need and starts at £224. For two watches, a dual winder starts at £413. If you switch between four or more, a quad winder from £599 makes life simpler. Bigger collections can look at our multi watch winders, which hold 6, 8, 9 or even 12+ watches.

Which finish?
This one comes down to taste and where the winder will live. Carbon fibre watch winders have a sharp, modern look. Leather watch winders feel warmer and suit a study or dressing room. We also have wood veneer and piano lacquer finishes for a more classic look. And if you want our very best, take a look at our premium watch winders.

What settings?
Every automatic watch needs a different number of turns per day, known as TPD. Set it too high and you wear the movement for no reason. So pick a winder with adjustable settings, and check what your watch needs in our TPD settings guide.

What makes a good watch winder?

A good winder should do a few simple things well:

  • Let you change the turns per day and the direction
  • Run quietly, so it's fine in a living room or bedroom
  • Hold the watch firmly without marking it
  • Have enough slots for the watches you actually wear
  • Look good enough to leave on display

Watch winders for women and men

The mechanism is the same whoever wears the watch. What changes is the size of the watch and the style you like. For smaller ladies' watches, check that the cushion fits the wrist size properly. For larger men's watches, make sure the cushion has room. A dual winder also makes a great gift for a couple.

Looking after the rest of your collection

A winder keeps the movement moving, but your other watches need a home too. Watches you wear less often are happy in watch boxes. If security matters, a watch winder safe protects them as well as shows them off. For display, see our luxury watch stands, and for trips away, a leather watch roll keeps a watch safe in your bag.

FAQs

What does a watch winder do?
It turns your automatic watch gently while you're not wearing it. That keeps the watch running, so the time and date are right when you pick it up.

Are watch winders bad for automatic watches?
No, as long as the settings are right. Problems only start when the turns per day are set much higher than your watch needs. Choose a winder with adjustable settings and you're fine.

How many turns per day (TPD) does my watch need?
It depends on the watch. Many sit somewhere between 650 and 1,000 turns a day. Check your watch maker's figure, or use our TPD settings guide.

Do I really need a watch winder?
If you wear one watch every day, probably not. If you have a few automatics and don't want to reset them each time, a winder saves you the hassle.

What is the best watch winder in the UK?
The best one is the one that suits your watches. Look for adjustable settings, quiet running and the right number of slots. Our premium watch winders are a great place to start.

Should I buy a single, dual or quad watch winder?
Buy for the watches you rotate. One watch needs a single winder, two a dual, and four or more a quad or multi watch winder.

Do you offer free UK delivery?
Yes. All our watch winders come with free UK delivery. See our delivery page for details.

Can I use a watch winder for a ladies' watch?
Yes. Just check that the cushion fits your watch and set the right turns per day.

Are watch winders noisy?
Ours are built to run quietly, so they're fine in a bedroom or study. If noise worries you, call us and we'll point you to a quiet model.

Can I keep my watch winder in a safe?
Yes. A watch winder safe is made for exactly that.
