Mainspring
The mainspring is a long, thin ribbon of steel coiled inside a drum called the barrel. Winding the watch — by crown or by rotor — tightens the coil, and the spring's constant effort to uncoil is what drives every gear, wheel and hand in the movement. It is, quite literally, the fuel tank and the engine's fuel in one part.
The oldest idea in the watch
Spring power predates the wristwatch by centuries, and the modern mainspring is a refined version of the same idea: store energy mechanically, release it slowly and evenly through the gear train, and let the escapement meter it out in measured ticks. Two properties decide how a given watch behaves. The spring's dimensions and metallurgy set how much energy it can hold — which, with the barrel, sets the power reserve. And the way its outer end attaches to the barrel decides what happens at full wind.
Two attachments, two behaviours
In a manual-wind movement, the mainspring's outer end hooks fixedly to the barrel. Wind to the end and you feel the crown resist — the spring can accept no more, and forcing it risks damage. In an automatic movement, the spring ends instead in a slipping bridle: a short, tensioned section that grips the barrel wall until full wind is reached, then slips to shed any surplus. That single difference is why you can leave an automatic on a winder without a moment's worry about overwinding, and why hand-winding a manual watch calls for a gentler hand.
Modern mainsprings are also far better than their ancestors. Today's springs are drawn from complex alloys that resist taking a permanent set, shrug off the moisture that reaches them, and hold their temper for decades; the snapped spring that was once a routine failure of mid-century watches is now an unusual event. When a spring does tire, it tends to announce itself politely — a watch that once ran two days now runs one — long before it fails outright.
What it means for your winder
Everything a winder does is done to this spring. The turns per day setting on your winder is simply a budget: how much rotation your movement needs each day to replace what its mainspring spent. Set it correctly and the spring hovers in its comfortable working range — which is also where a movement keeps its most consistent time, since a nearly-spent spring delivers weaker, less even torque than a healthy one. A watch that lives on its winder is, in mainspring terms, a watch that never goes hungry and is never force-fed.
Frequently asked questions
Can a mainspring break?
Yes, though modern alloys have made it uncommon. A broken spring usually presents as a watch that winds without resistance and will not run — a watchmaker's repair, not a winder problem, and one of the classic faults a routine service prevents by replacing springs before they fail.
Does keeping a watch fully wound wear the spring out faster?
No meaningful evidence supports that. Springs tire over years of service and are routinely renewed at servicing; a spring held at working tension by a correctly set winder is under no unusual stress — and far less than the shock and strain of daily wear.
