Why Movements Matter

A watch is only as good as its movement. The case, dial, and bracelet are what you see; the movement is what you're actually buying. A great movement delivers accuracy, reliability, longevity, and — in the finest examples — a level of engineering artistry that rivals anything produced by human hands.

Understanding movements also makes you a better collector. Knowing the difference between an in-house calibre and an ébauche, between a lever escapement and a co-axial, between a column wheel and a cam-actuated chronograph — these distinctions separate the informed collector from the casual buyer. Here are the movements that every serious enthusiast should know.

Rolex Calibre 3135 — The Benchmark of Reliability

The Rolex Calibre 3135 is arguably the most important watch movement of the modern era. Introduced in 1988 and used in the Submariner, Datejust, and Day-Date for over three decades, the 3135 set the standard for what a luxury automatic movement should be: accurate, robust, low-maintenance, and capable of withstanding the demands of daily wear in almost any environment.

The 3135 features Rolex's proprietary Parachrom hairspring — made from a paramagnetic alloy that is ten times more resistant to shocks than a traditional hairspring and virtually unaffected by magnetic fields. Its Paraflex shock absorbers provide additional protection against impact. The movement is COSC-certified as a chronometer, meaning it has been independently tested to an accuracy of -4/+6 seconds per day — though Rolex's internal standards are significantly tighter.

The 3135 has since been succeeded by the Calibre 3235, which introduced the Chronergy escapement for improved efficiency and a 70-hour power reserve. But the 3135 remains the movement that defined modern Rolex — and the standard against which all competitors are measured.

Patek Philippe Calibre 240 — Ultra-Thin Perfection

The Patek Philippe Calibre 240 is one of the most elegant movements ever made. Introduced in 1977, it is an ultra-thin automatic movement measuring just 2.53mm in height — achieved through the use of a peripheral micro-rotor that winds the mainspring from the edge of the movement rather than the centre, allowing the movement to remain extraordinarily slim.

The 240 is used in some of Patek's most celebrated dress watches, including the Calatrava and the Golden Ellipse. Its finishing — Geneva stripes, bevelled bridges, and hand-chamfered edges — is executed to a standard that few other manufacturers approach. The movement is a masterclass in the principle that the finest engineering is also the most beautiful.

Omega Calibre 321 — The Moon Movement

The Omega Calibre 321 is the movement that went to the moon. Used in the Speedmaster Professional from 1959 through 1968, the 321 is a column-wheel chronograph movement of exceptional quality — the column wheel being the more complex and precise method of controlling chronograph functions, as opposed to the simpler cam-actuated design used in many competitors.

The 321 was replaced by the Calibre 861 in 1968 — a decision that disappointed purists, as the 861, while reliable, lacked the column wheel of its predecessor. Omega reintroduced the 321 in 2020 in a limited edition Speedmaster, hand-assembled using the same techniques as the original. The reissue sold out immediately and commands significant premiums on the secondary market.

ETA 2824-2 — The Movement That Powered an Industry

Not every great movement is exotic. The ETA 2824-2 is a Swiss-made automatic calibre that has powered watches from hundreds of brands — from entry-level fashion watches to respected mid-range pieces from Tudor, Ball, and Tissot. Its significance lies not in complication or finishing but in reliability, repairability, and ubiquity.

The 2824-2 is accurate, robust, and serviced by watchmakers worldwide. It has been in continuous production since 1982 and remains one of the most widely used movements in the industry. For collectors, it represents the baseline — the movement against which everything else is compared.

A. Lange & Söhne Calibre L951.1 — German Precision Defined

The A. Lange & Söhne Calibre L951.1, used in the Lange 1, is one of the most distinctive movements in watchmaking. Its most immediately visible feature is the outsize date — a large, instantly legible date display that uses two separate discs to show tens and units independently, requiring a complex mechanism to advance both simultaneously at midnight.

The L951.1 is finished to a standard that rivals anything produced in Switzerland. Every component is individually decorated — three-quarter plate in German silver, hand-engraved balance cock, blued screws, and bevelled edges polished to a mirror finish. The movement is assembled twice: once to check function, then disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled for final delivery. This double-assembly process is unique to Lange and ensures a level of quality control that no other manufacturer matches.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 101 — The World's Smallest

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 101 holds the record for the world's smallest mechanical movement, a distinction it has held since 1929. Measuring just 14mm long, 4.8mm wide, and 3.4mm high, and weighing less than one gram, the 101 contains 98 components and is used exclusively in ladies' jewellery watches of extraordinary delicacy.

The 101 has been worn by Queen Elizabeth II, Grace Kelly, and Audrey Hepburn. It remains in production today — assembled entirely by hand under magnification by a small team of specialist watchmakers. It is a reminder that the greatest achievements in watchmaking are not always the most complicated, but sometimes the most precise.

Vacheron Constantin Calibre 2755 — The Most Complicated Production Movement

The Vacheron Constantin Calibre 2755, used in the Tour de l'Ile, contains 834 components and 16 complications — making it the most complicated movement ever used in a production wristwatch at the time of its introduction in 2005. Its complications include a tourbillon, a perpetual calendar, a minute repeater, an equation of time, a sunrise/sunset display, and a sky chart of the northern hemisphere.

Only seven examples of the Tour de l'Ile were made — one for each continent. Each sold for approximately CHF 1.5 million at retail. The Calibre 2755 represents the absolute pinnacle of what a production movement can achieve.

A great movement deserves great care.
