For a simple three-hand automatic, a watch winder is a convenience. For a perpetual calendar, it is closer to essential. Calendar complications are the one area where letting a watch stop costs you real time, occasionally real money, and always a little anxiety about doing damage while you put things right.
What actually happens when a calendar watch stops
A perpetual calendar tracks the date, day, month and leap year, and in some cases the moonphase. Left to run down, all of it has to be brought back into step. That is not a matter of spinning the crown: many perpetuals must be advanced day by day, in the correct sequence, sometimes through several pushers, and on some references the mechanism cannot be adjusted backwards at all. Bring one back after three months in a drawer and you can spend an hour advancing it, or pay a watchmaker to do it for you.
An annual calendar is less demanding, since it only needs help once a year at the end of February, but the same principle applies. A moonphase left to stop needs a reference table to reset accurately. Keep the watch running and none of this ever comes up.
The danger zone you must avoid
Most calendar movements have a date-change window, typically somewhere between about 8pm and 3am, when the date mechanism is engaged and under tension. Adjusting the date during that window is the classic way to break teeth off a date wheel, and it is one of the more expensive avoidable repairs in watchmaking. The fewer times you set a calendar watch by hand, the fewer chances you have to get that wrong, which is the quietest argument for a winder there is.
Setting a winder up for a calendar watch
Three things matter, in this order:
-
Turns per day. Calendar movements often sit at the higher end of the range because they drive more wheels. Look your reference up in our TPD settings database rather than guessing.
-
Direction. Use the clockwise, anticlockwise or bidirectional setting the manufacturer specifies. Bidirectional is a safe default for many, but it is not universal.
-
Rest cycles. A winder that turns in programmed bursts and then rests keeps the mainspring topped up without running the movement all day.
One practical tip: set the watch fully and correctly once, on the winder, outside the date-change window. After that the winder's job is simply to keep it there.
Which winder suits a calendar collection
If your calendar watch is the centrepiece and the rest of the collection is simpler, a single watch winder dedicated to it makes sense, so it never stops regardless of what else you are wearing. A 2 watch winder covers a calendar plus a daily wearer, while a 4 watch winder or 6 watch winder lets you keep several complicated pieces set at once, each with its own TPD and direction. Larger collections run to an 8 watch winder or 12 watch winder. Given what a perpetual calendar is worth, individually programmable rotors and proper motor shielding matter more here than anywhere else, and for high-value pieces an insurance approved watch winder safe keeps the watch wound and locked away. Watches without calendars can rest happily in a lined luxury watch box, and the full range of premium Aevitas watch winders covers every collection size.
Frequently asked questions
Is it harmful to let a perpetual calendar stop?
Not mechanically, but resetting one is slow and fiddly, and every manual adjustment is a chance to damage the date mechanism.
When should I never change the date?
Avoid roughly 8pm to 3am, when the date change is engaged. Advance the time to mid-morning first if you are unsure.
Do annual calendars need a winder as much as perpetuals?
Less urgently, but the convenience is the same: the watch stays correct and ready to wear.
Can one winder hold watches with different settings?
Yes, if each rotor is individually programmable for turns per day and direction. Check that before buying a multi-watch winder.
