Most damage to a watch collection does not happen while the watches are being worn. It happens in the hours they spend in a sock drawer, on a sunny windowsill, or rattling loose in a suitcase somewhere over the Atlantic. Storage and travel are the unglamorous half of collecting, and getting them right costs far less than a single avoidable service bill.
The four things that quietly damage watches
-
Humidity. Damp air corrodes movements, spots dials and eventually rots leather straps. Aim for a stable, dry room rather than a bathroom or a cold loft, and keep a silica sachet in the drawer.
-
Light. Ultraviolet light fades lacquer, printed dials and coloured straps. Closed storage beats open display for anything you care about.
-
Magnetism. Phone cases, tablet covers, speakers and handbag clasps all carry magnets strong enough to send a mechanical watch minutes a day off. Keep watches away from them.
-
Contact. Watches stored loose together scratch each other. Individual cushioned compartments solve this for pennies per watch.
Winder or box? Both, usually
The honest answer is that they do different jobs. A watch winder keeps automatic watches running so lubricants stay distributed and a perpetual calendar or annual calendar never needs resetting, which matters most on watches that are complicated or awkward to set. A watch box stores everything else safely: hand-wound pieces, quartz watches, and the automatics you are not currently rotating.
A sensible setup is a winder sized to the watches you actually rotate, plus a box for the rest. For one or two watches, a single watch winder or 2 watch winder is right. Beyond that, a 4 watch winder or 6 watch winder covers most growing collections, and the overflow lives happily in a lined luxury watch box or a wooden watch box. Always set the winder to the turns per day your movement specifies, which you can look up in our TPD settings database.
Security at home
Two practical points most collectors learn late. First, insurers increasingly expect high-value watches to be kept in a rated safe, and some policies reduce or refuse a claim if they were not. Second, a safe that keeps watches still for months is doing half a job. A watch winder safe combines the two, keeping automatics wound behind a locked door. Whatever you choose, keep a written inventory with photographs, serial numbers and valuations somewhere off-site, such as cloud storage. It is the difference between a smooth claim and an argument.
Travelling with watches
Rules that have saved a lot of collectors a lot of grief:
-
Never check them in. Watches travel in hand luggage or on your wrist, full stop. Checked bags get lost and are almost never covered for jewellery.
-
Take fewer than you want to. Two watches covers formal and casual. A third is usually ego.
-
Use a proper roll. A padded leather watch roll keeps each watch in its own cushioned pocket so nothing knocks together, and it fits in a bag far better than a rigid box. For smaller wrists and pieces there are also ladies watch roll travel cases.
-
Be discreet. Watch theft is targeted and opportunistic. A cuff over the watch in an unfamiliar city is free insurance.
-
Check your cover travels. Many home policies limit or exclude items taken abroad. Ask before you fly, not after.
-
Mind the pressure and the pool. Sunscreen degrades gaskets and rubber straps; rinse a watch in fresh water after sea or chlorine, and never operate a crown or pushers while the watch is wet.
Coming home
Unpack the watches the day you get back rather than leaving them in a warm bag. Wipe cases and bracelets with a soft dry cloth, let leather straps air rather than sealing them away damp, reset anything that has stopped, and put the automatics back on the winder so they are ready to wear. Five minutes of routine here is what keeps a collection looking ten years younger than its age. Browse the full range of premium Aevitas watch winders if your current setup has been outgrown.
Frequently asked questions
Is it bad to let an automatic watch stop?
Occasionally stopping does no harm. Months of sitting still is less ideal, because oils settle and thicken, and every restart means handling the crown.
Can I take a watch through airport security?
Yes. Scanners and X-ray machines do not magnetise mechanical watches. It is safer on your wrist or in your hand luggage than anywhere else.
How should I store leather straps?
Dry, out of direct sun, and not compressed flat for years. Rotate straps and let them breathe between wears.
Do I need a humidity-controlled box?
For most UK homes, no. A stable dry room, closed storage and a silica sachet are enough unless you keep watches in a cellar, garage or loft.
